The Harry Hus Award

AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS

FOR OFFICIAL OF THE YEAR

THE AWARD

The Harry Hus Award is presented annually to the MMBRA Official of the Year, recognizing an official whose performance, professionalism and contribution to the association have distinguished them throughout the season.

The award was named in honour of Harry Hus in 2022, recognizing one of the most accomplished and respected figures in MMBRA history. A longtime MMBRA official, mentor and ambassador for basketball, Harry's influence on officiating extends far beyond his own career.

THE LEGACY OF HARRY HUS

A graduate of Baron Byng High School, Harry earned a Commerce degree from Loyola College in 1964 and a teaching diploma from McGill University in 1968. He first built a successful career in soccer coaching, winning eight conference championships, two national championships and eight conference Coach of the Year awards. He was inducted as a builder into the Concordia Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.

Harry turned his focus to basketball officiating in 1983 and went on to officiate at every level of the game for six decades, including 40 years at the university level. His career took him around the world, including assignments at international tournaments and the FISU Games, as well as pre-Olympic tournaments. He was also selected for the 1980 Moscow Olympics before the assignment was cancelled due to the Olympic boycott.

His many honours include the Canadian Basketball Officials Association Individual Achievement Award, Basketball Quebec Official of the Year, the RSEQ University Official of the Year and the Ted Earley Memorial Award. In 2022, he received the Prix Gilles Brière for his long-term contribution to the development of officiating in Quebec.

"A MMBRA LEGEND"

Harry Hus has left an enduring mark on MMBRA and generations of basketball officials. His longevity, accomplishments, professionalism and commitment to developing others have made him a defining figure in the association's history.

The Harry Hus Award carries that legacy forward by recognizing the MMBRA Official of the Year and celebrating those who demonstrate the dedication, professionalism and commitment to excellence that have defined Harry's career.
