Recognizing Excellence Beyond the Court
The Tony Payne Award recognizes a MMBRA official whose involvement, contribution and reputation exemplify the highest standards of officiating, professionalism and service to the association and the basketball community.
First presented in 2023, the award is presented annually when an official meets the criteria for recognition. It honours a member whose impact extends beyond their work on the court and whose dedication has helped strengthen MMBRA and the officiating community.
The Legacy of Tony Payne
Tony Payne began his officiating career and quickly rose through the ranks. By 1976, his skill and knowledge of the game had earned him a place as a table official, marking the beginning of a remarkable career in basketball officiating.
In Quebec, Tony became a fixture in the university league, where he established himself as one of the province's leading officials. His performances earned him invitations to represent Quebec at numerous men's and women's National Championships, where he continued to excel.
Following a distinguished university officiating career, Tony took on a new role as a supervisor, giving back to the league he had helped master. At the local level, he continued to support the development of the next generation of officials as MMBRA's Head of Supervision.
For more than half a century, Tony Payne has represented the very best of officiating. His professionalism, character and commitment to developing others have made him a true gentleman and ambassador for the game.
The Tony Payne Award carries that legacy forward by recognizing MMBRA officials who demonstrate the same spirit of excellence, service and commitment to the basketball community.
