Over the weekend of October 9–12, four MMBRA referees — Al Mcinnis, Sheradyne Prosper, Florence Léonard, and Owen Kolinski — traded the city hardwood for a northern adventure. The crew flew out early Thursday morning at 8 a.m., heading to Inukjuak, an Inuit community located on the shores of Hudson Bay in Nunavik, northern Quebec.
Inukjuak, home to roughly 1,800 residents, is one of the larger villages in Nunavik. The community is known for its strong sense of tradition, breathtaking Arctic landscapes, and passion for sports that bring people together — especially basketball, which continues to grow in popularity among local youth.
Throughout the weekend, the MMBRA officials refereed a local basketball tournament featuring teams from across northern Quebec. The event showcased impressive talent and community spirit, with athletes and fans filling the gym to celebrate the game.
Beyond officiating, the crew also hosted a mini referee clinic for local participants interested in learning more about the art of officiating. The session provided a valuable opportunity to share knowledge, answer questions, and help develop future officials in the region.
MMBRA is proud to have been part of this special weekend, helping to support and grow the game of basketball — not just in Montreal, but across Quebec. The trip to Inukjuak served as a reminder of how sport continues to connect communities, no matter how far north the court may be.
