ABOUT GILLES BRIÈRE

Gilles Brière is recognized for his dedication and passion for officiating in parasport. He first built a distinguished career as an international wheelchair basketball official, earning induction into the Parasports Québec Hall of Fame in the Bill-Hepburn wheelchair basketball category in 2000.

Following the 2000 Sydney Paralympic Games, Brière transitioned to wheelchair rugby, where he continued his career as an official and supervisor. He attended four Paralympic Games between 2004 and 2016 and five World Championships, where he officiated several finals. He also served as Head Referee for the Americas for approximately a decade.

Beyond his work as an official and supervisor, Brière dedicated much of his career to the education and development of officials. He shared his expertise internationally, conducting clinics and training sessions in countries including Japan, Australia, New Zealand, France, Chile and Brazil.

Brière was also one of the original founders of the Provincial Officiating Committee (CPA), helping establish the organization and its role in the development of officiating in Quebec. He continues to contribute to the next generation of officials today, serving as a provincial supervisor at the U SPORTS and CCAA levels. In 2019, he became the first person inducted into two categories of the Parasports Québec Hall of Fame, following his induction into the Errol-Paillé wheelchair rugby category.
