On Sunday, October 5th, history was made at McGill University’s Love Competition Hall. For the first time ever, a U SPORTS men’s basketball game in Quebec was officiated by an all-female officiating crew — a milestone moment for officiating in the province.
The crew featured Maripier Malo (COBB), Shelley Quintos (MMBRA), and Frédérique Lorrain (MMBRA), three accomplished officials whose combined experience and dedication exemplify excellence on the court. The matchup saw Saint Mary’s University take on McGill University in preseason action, with McGill emerging victorious, 89–70.
Beyond the scoreboard, however, the day was about far more than the game itself. A number of women officials from across Montreal gathered in the stands to witness and celebrate this historic moment, showing their support for the trailblazing crew. Their presence highlighted a growing community of women in basketball officiating — one that continues to inspire, uplift, and break barriers.
This landmark game reflects the continued progress within the officiating community and the commitment of organizations like MMBRA and COBB to fostering inclusivity and representation at all levels of basketball.
Congratulations to Maripier, Shelley, and Frédérique on this incredible achievement — and to every official who continues to pave the way for the next generation of women in officiating.
