This year’s Sun Youth Holiday Classic brought a festive spirit and high-level basketball action to Montreal from December 12–14, as 22 games were played across three thrilling days at Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf and École secondaire Saint-Laurent. The Classic once again lived up to its reputation as one of the premier holiday basketball events in the region, blending elite competition, community celebration, and volunteerism in support of the Sun Youth Organization.
The Metropolitan Montreal Basketball Referees Association was proud to contribute to the success of the tournament. A total of 25 MMBRA referees — joined by additional officials from nearby regions — volunteered their time for this fundraising event.
Every contest featured three-person referee crews, providing an excellent development opportunity for MMBRA officials. Throughout the weekend, less experienced referees had the chance to learn directly from seasoned supervisors in high-energy game environments, strengthening their skills and building confidence for the rest of the season.
The Classic continued its tradition of attracting talent from across borders. In addition to teams from Quebec and Ontario, squads from the United States — including programs from Connecticut and Massachusetts — competed on the hardwood, showcasing a variety of playing styles and competitive matchups over the three days of action.
The Sun Youth Holiday Classic has grown into a showcase event featuring top youth talent — giving players the chance to compete against elite opponents and gain exposure while supporting a charitable cause.
While the on-court competition was exciting, the social event of the year on Saturday night was a standout highlight. Officials, coaches, players, and volunteers came together for an evening of camaraderie and celebration, marking one of the tournament’s most successful social gatherings to date. It was a chance for referees and participants alike to relax and reflect on the weekend’s games, deepen connections within the basketball community, and fuel the teamwork that makes events like this possible.
Whether sharing stories from early games, cheering on standout performances, or simply enjoying the festive atmosphere, the Saturday night social brought together everyone involved in an unforgettable way.
The Holiday Classic isn’t just about basketball — it’s a fundraiser for Sun Youth, supporting the organization’s broader mission to serve Montreal’s youth and families. MMBRA’s volunteer efforts reflect the association’s commitment to community engagement, and we were honoured to once again be part of an event that channels the spirit of giving during the holiday season.
