The Metropolitan Montreal Basketball Referee Association (MMBRA) is pleased to announce the details of its upcoming Recruitment Clinic for the 2026 season. The clinic will welcome new and prospective officials interested in beginning their journey in basketball officiating.
The Recruitment Clinic will take place on Saturday, August 22 and Sunday, August 23, 2026, at Dalbé-Viau High School in Lachine. Attendance on both days is mandatory. Registration will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 8:55 a.m., with the clinic running from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day.
Throughout the weekend, participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of basketball officiating through a combination of classroom instruction and practical on-court sessions. Topics covered will include FIBA rules, referee positioning, signals and mechanics, game management, communication, floor coverage, and practical officiating exercises.
The clinic follows Basketball Canada’s National Officials Certification Program (NOCP Level 0), providing new officials with a strong foundation and an introduction to the mechanics and standards used by officials across Canada.
Participants are asked to bring a notebook and pen, athletic clothing for on-court sessions, and clean all-black running shoes. Each participant will receive a new whistle and referee shirt as part of their clinic registration.
Before attending the clinic, all participants are required to review the FIBA Official Rules, FIBA Official Interpretations, and introductory two-person mechanics materials. Reviewing these resources in advance will help participants get the most out of the classroom and practical sessions throughout the weekend.
Following the Recruitment Clinic, prospective officials will continue their development through a mandatory selection tournament, where they will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a supervised game environment. The tournament is expected to take place during a weekend in late September or early October 2026, with further details to be provided during the clinic.
New recruits are also encouraged to attend MMBRA’s annual preseason meeting, known as the Bull Session, taking place on Saturday, September 12, 2026. This event provides an opportunity for new officials to meet members of the association and learn more about the upcoming season.
The cost of the Recruitment Clinic is $175. Individuals interested in participating are asked to register their interest by completing the form available on the MMBRA website’s Become a Referee page.
